Time to present our case of the week Everyone meet Topher
Topher is a senior chow who came to me for severe, random pain that was difficult to find. His appetite was reduced, he wasn't acting like himself, had poor stool quality and even vomited a couple of times. He had normal X-rays and his lab work showed just an anemia, likely from a flea situation.
On exam he was painful in his back and neck, weak, and somewhat cool on his back. He was nauseated and had weak deep pulses and irritated skin. His tongue was wet and flabby. I diagnosed him with a Kidney Yang and Qi Deficiency, Spleen Qi Deficiency, Local Qi and Blood Stagnation along the spine, and Wind Heat.
Based on his Chinese medicine patterns, I recommended specific nutritional options to get his digestion on track and then slowly introduced Chinese herbal medications for balance and pain. We did 2 initial acupuncture sessions about 2 weeks apart to help with nausea, pain, Qi, Yang, and Wind. I made some recommendations to help with fleas as well.
My favorite moment from this case was his first acupuncture session, where I added an appetite stimulant point, Shan Gen, and he devoured a bowl of food immediately.
My second favorite was seeing him back after several weeks on the herbs and hearing the he "is like a new dog". His family shifted from hand feeding him on the floor and thinking they were going to lose him, to struggling to keep up with him on walks.
I know that Chinese medicine works but I love seeing these big success stories that confirm I'm out here on the right path helping patients naturally!
I'll be seeing Topher every 8 weeks for maintenance acupuncture and herbs!
